New Year's Resolutions for 2011...

Happy New Year, All:

Once again, it's time to make some New Year's Resolutions for 2010, particularly in regards to gaming during 2011. This year, my schedule looks a little more open, although raising a baby into toddler-hood will still have impact on my available time. Nonetheless, I still hope to accomplish a number of things in the coming year.

As a reminder, I put all of my resolutions in a three word format, as there's an unwritten law that all Universal Truths can be expressed in three words. For example, please consider the following: "Love is blind!", "Life is pain!" and "It's a trap!" Besides, three word phrases are easier to remember throughout the year, and if you can remember your resolutions, then you are more apt to complete them.

For Gaming, my New Year's Resolutions for 2011 are:

1. Publish four products. Last year, I made a goal out of publishing four products, and I only managed to get three out. This year, I'm taking up the gauntlet once again, and will be trying to get four products out. I already know two of them, as they are near relative completion: MyD20 Lite Referee's Guide and Stellar Quest. I imagine that one more will be MyD20 Lite Bestiary, and the fourth will likely be a Traveller product.

2. Run modules online. I keep thinking about running some games online, so this will be the year that I buckle down and do it. My goal here is to run more than one multi-session module online. As the time draws near to run them, I'll open the door for volunteers for playing and participating in the sessions.

3. Be a player. Being a GM is great, but it helps to remember what it's like to be a player, too. This year, I resolve to be a player as well, and try to find a game or three I can play in, so long as that can fit into my already complicated schedule. This may mean online gaming in addition to a local face-to-face game. I know people who can write beautifully about gaming while never sitting down at a table, but those are few and far between. I'm currently a GM, but I haven't played in a while, and I think I need to get some more experience in that arena. Not only will it help my writing, but it may help with my general stress level.

As always, I'm sure I'll do a lot more in regards to gaming, but these should make very good resolutions. The above will be a stretch, particularly given my time constraints, but if I can manage it, then 2011 will be a very satisfying year for me, at least on the gaming front.

Flynn

2010: New Year's Resolutions In Review...

GOod Morning, All:

Today, I reviewed my 2010 Gaming Resolutions, figuring that doing so helps me to evaluate what I have accomplished in the past year. Besides, tomorrow I need to post my 2011 Gaming Resolutions.

I failed to accomplish my first resolution for this year, publish four products. I did publish three books/supplements: MyD20 Lite Player's Guide, Hammersong's Legacy Campaign Setting, and Book of Races. I still feel good about what I got done, as I grossly underestimated the impact that a new baby would have on my available time. That I got three things completed in 2010 is pretty good, comparatively.

I succeeded in my second resolution, blog thrice weekly. I covered a wide range of topics in the 250 posts I've made this year, and actually posted an average of 4.8 posts a week. That's another feel-good moment from reviewing this year's resolutions.

In regards to my third resolution, publish four fanzines, I did not succeed in the slightest. However, I did transfer my editorship (and essentially the ownership of the Stellar Reaches fanzine) to Alvin Plummer mid-way through the year. He managed to publish four issues in the remainder of this year, accomplishing my resolution, but not through any effort on my part. I cannot claim it as a victory for me, but I do think making that decision was the best thing for the fans.

So, roughly, I feel like I hit it 50/50 this year, in terms of meeting my resolutions. Next year, I hope to do better. How did you do with yours?

With Regards,
Flynn

New Year's Gaming Resolutions for 2010...

Good Evening, All:

Like most bloggers on the RPG circuit, this is the time when I feel I should make a number of New Year's Resolutions for 2010, particularly in regards to gaming during the coming year. As my wife is pregnant and due in early June, this coming year is going to be particularly challenging on that front. Nonetheless, here are my three gaming resolutions for 2010.

As a side note, I put all of my resolutions in a three word format, as there's an unwritten rule that all Universal Truths can be expressed in three words. For example, please consider the following: "Love is blind!", "Life is pain!" and "It's a trap!" Besides, three word phrases are easier to remember throughout the year, and if you can remember your resolutions, then you are more apt to complete them.

For Gaming, my New Year's Resolutions for 2010 are:

1. Publish four products.  Last year, I made a goal out of publishing three products, and I successfully did so. This year, I'm upping the ante, and putting the minimum total of products at four. Hopefully, I'll meet and even exceed that number.

2. Blog thrice weekly. Now that I have an RPG blog, it helps if I have content. Therefore, I'm making the resolution to blog here at least three times a week. I'm sure I'll try a bunch of different things, and hopefully along the way, I'll come up with interesting posts that contribute something back to the community.

3. Publish four fanzines. I've been very lax in publishing issues of Stellar Reaches, my Traveller fanzine. This year, I am resolving to publish four issues, one per season. These do not apply to the first resolution given above, as they are not products that I will post on the Samardan Press storefront.

I'm sure I'll do a lot more in regards to gaming, but these should make very good resolutions that will contribute to the gaming community at least on some level. Ultimately, that's really what it's all about. I know that I will be gaming as regularly as life allows. That isn't a stretch. The above will be a stretch, but if I can manage it, then I'll be a very happy camper at the end of 2010, at least on the gaming front.

More Later,
Flynn
